The First Impressions of the GMC Sonoma for 2002

April 8th, 2009

GMC Sonoma

As time has gone by several things can be said about the GMC Sonoma series: including the strong reaction most buyers have towards their truck. The 4-cylinder engine is at the core of the strong emotions, it is reliable for its class and delivers a huge amount of torque.

GMC Sonoma Engine Specs

The Sonoma SL is equipped with a General Motors 2.2 liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 8 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a General Motors 4-speed Transmission. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Standard Cab Pickup arena.

The Sonoma uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

The fuel system for the 2002 Sonoma is a traditional SFI, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 18.00 gallons.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Sonoma SL are 67.90 inches wide by 190.60 inches long. It sits a comfortable 62.00 inches off the ground. It seats a standard three passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 108.30 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

A powertrain warranty is provided (36,000 miles/36 months), and a 36,000 mile, 36 month guarantee also comes with the GMC Sonoma. This is standard for the price range.

The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $13,975 when new. The dealer cost on the truck was $13,206. This price was high compared to the industry standard price for a 2-door Standard Cab Pickup.

Fuel Efficiency

The Sonoma SL received an fuel efficiency rating of 16 - 22 MPG driving in the city and 22 - 28 when it came to long-distance. The flex-powered Sonoma is a hybrid truck.

In 2001 and 2002 the Sonoma SL was availble in the exterior colors of Cherry Red Metallic, Fire Red, Flame Yellow, Indigo Blue Metallic, Onyx Black, Pewter Metallic, Polo Green Metallic, Sandalwood Metallic, and Summit White. Additional options were made available by the factory.

We Think…

Considering all factors the 2002 GMC Sonoma SL was a very important. GMC responded to critisims about the 2001 Sonoma and made dramatic changes. The result is better than the sum of its parts. I’m sure GMC has more in store in the future.
