April 3rd, 2009

GMC Sierra 2500

A high point in the cab & chassis market is the GMC Sierra 2500. In 2002 GMC released an upgraded version of the Sierra 2500 with four versions: Base, SL, SLE, and SLT. Sales for the Sierra 2500, especially the Sierra 2500 SL, were brisk during 2002 and 2003. The improved reliability and the sporty styling were responsible for the sales boost.

The restyled Sierra 2500 SL is equipped with a 6.0-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a Hydra-Matic four-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2001 version.

The fuel system for the 2002 Sierra 2500 is a SFI design, using BI-FUEL fuel. The fuel flow is controlled by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 12 gallons.

The Sierra 2500 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

The Sierra 2500 is inches long, inches wide, and inches high. It has a wheelbase of inches. It is able to seat several adults comfortably.

The manufacturer retail price (MSRP) was an industry-average price when new. The dealer cost on the truck was an industry-average price. This price was high compared to the industry average price for a 2-door Cab & Chassis.

The Sierra 2500 SL received an fuel efficiency rating of 17 MPG driving in the city and 23 when it came to long-distance. The bi-fuel-powered Sierra 2500 is a hybrid truck.

In 2001 and 2002 the Sierra 2500 SL was availble in the exterior colors of several colors. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.

The standard warranty period for the Sierra 2500 is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. There is also a warranty on the powertrain for 36* months or 50,000* miles respectively. This is standard in the cab & chassis market.

In summation the 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 SL was a great success. GMC responded to critisims about the 2001 Sierra 2500 and made dramatic changes. The result is a great truck and even better cab & chassis. I’m sure GMC has more in store in the future.

My spouse purchased mine for the 6.0 liter engine. Plus the 4-gear tranny.
