April 10th, 2009

GMC Sonoma

Several things can be said about the GMC Sonoma series: including the polarizing reactions most buyers have towards their truck. The four-cylinder engine is at the heart of the strong emotions, it is powerful for its class and delivers a large amount of torque.

Stop and Go

Standard equipment in the Sonoma for 2001 and 2002 includes the 2.2 liter engine by General Motors, weighing in at 4 cylinders and eight valves. A 4-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the Vortec engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Sonoma.

The Sonoma uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

Statistics

The Sonoma is 190.60 inches long, 67.90 inches wide, and 62.00 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 108.30 inches. It is able to seat 3 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $13,975 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $13,206. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Standard Cab Pickup.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2002 Sonoma is a SFI system, running on FLEX . The fuel is regulated by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design.

The Sonoma SLS received a miles-per-gallon rating of 16 - 22 in-city driving and 22 - 28 when it came to highway driving. Being a flex-powered green truck, this was within normal parameters.

What We Think of the GMC Sonoma

There are several reasons why the GMC Sonoma SLS sold well in 2002. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a GMC, specifically a Sonoma.
