The GMC Sierra 1500 Base for 2002: Improving on 2001

GMC Sierra 1500

The 2002 Sierra 1500 is an important vehicle to GMC for the standard cab pickup market segment. The Base is a member of a series of six trim levels for the Sierra 1500 which include HT, SLE, WT, SLT, and Base. The two-door truck with its four-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for GMC. There is strong competition from vehicles from Lexus.

GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Specs: The Sierra 1500 Base comes outfitted with a Vortec 5.3 liter, 8-cylinder motor that uses 16 valves. The engine, manufactured by General Motors, is teamed up with a General Motors 4-speed transmission. This arrangement has demonstrated to be an effective style for GMC.

The fuel system for the 2002 Sierra 1500 is a SFI design, running on FLEX fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The storage capacity of the fuel tank is 34.00 gallons.

The Sierra 1500 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

157.50 of wheelbase allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers. It sits a comfortable 70.80 inches off the ground. It seats a standard six passengers, with 2 doors. The dimensions of the Sierra 1500 Base are 246.60 inches long by 78.50 inches wide.

Cost is always a factor when looking at a truck. The GMC Sierra 1500 lists at $25,667 when new. The dealer cost on the truck was $22,459. This price was in line with the industry standard price for a 2-door standard cab pickup.

The Sierra 1500 Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of fifteen in-city driving and 19 - 20 when it came to long-distance. Being a flex-powered hybrid truck, this was subpar.

The vehicle is available in Fire Red, Indigo Blue Metallic, Onyx Black, Pewter Metallic, Polo Green Metallic, Storm Gray Metallic, and Summit White.

A powertrain warranty is provided (36,000 miles/36 months), and a 36,000 mile, 36 month guarantee also comes with the GMC Sierra 1500.

There are several reasons why the GMC Sierra 1500 Base sold well in 2002. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a GMC, specifically a Sierra 1500.
